The Challenge

Today, we took a long drive out to Vinton, Iowa (population 5,000) for a Hillary Clinton for President event. It was a little bit chillier today, at about 18 degrees.

As expected, our efforts to expose the crimes of Planned Parenthood were met with hostility. As soon as attendees read the headline of our flier, many immediately tried to hand it back to us. So we challenged them: "I challenge you to read it and then tell me what you think." However, nobody accepted our challenge, and many fliers were crumpled up or thrown to the ground.

However, I do not think we failed in our mission to educate, as many attendees took the flier in with them. Many put it in their jacket or purse, and had to face it eventually. And certainly, thoughts of abortion and Planned Parenthood instantly became at the forefront of people's minds as they walked into the event. Its important that the voters of Iowa, who carry so much weight and responsibility and carry so much pride in having the "first in the nation" say in who our next president is, think about a critical issue that destroys the lives of women and their babies.

Tomorrow we'll be working with a new group of local activists to protest Planned Parenthood, so stay tuned!

Why I'm Protesting Planned Parenthood

The following is a post by Terry Schilling, a pro-life activist from the Quad Cities. Terry is currently a student at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has served as president of the student body. Terry also worked as the Iowa youth director and later as the Eastern Iowa field director on the Brownback for President campaign.

Ever since I was a little kid I have been involved in the pro-life movement. I remember getting in fights with other kids in my kindergarten class because their parents voted for Bill Clinton. I would go protest Planned Parenthood with my mother. I would go to the prayer vigil outside of abortion clinics on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I would always get into abortion debates during school, I even chastised a teacher for supporting abortion in front of my class. The entire time that I was doing this, I never thought that I would have to personally choose life. How wrong I was.

My senior year was going great. I had a 4.0 for the first semester, my football team went to the semi-finals, my family was expecting our 8th sibling, and to top it off I had a wonderful girlfriend. However, the New Year would bring a huge change to my life. It was in mid-January that I found out that my girlfriend was pregnant. I can't speak for her, but I was scared out of my mind. I kept thinking, "I am not ready to be a dad. I can't provide for a family. I can't stop everything that I am doing and change all my plans and dreams."

My girlfriend and I went through everything that scared teenagers go through when they have a crisis pregnancy. Depression, fear, sadness, anger and a whole lot more. But the one thing that I think that we experienced that most people don't try to experience, was Hope. I could not have experienced this without the support of my loving and wise parents. They helped me plan things out. They helped me sort through all of my options. They brought up adoption, they brought up going to college and paying child support and seeing the baby as much as I could. They brought up getting married, and they brought up raising the baby as friends.

There were so many options that I had not thought of because I was scared out of my mind and couldn't think straight.

My girlfriend and I decided that in order to choose what was best for our child we needed to discern what God wanted. We went on a full day retreat of prayer and discernment with a pastor of ours that we both trusted.

After this retreat it was clear to both of us that the best thing for our child was to give him/her two loving parents who loved each other and him/her unconditionally. We both decided that we were not ready to get married and that it would be best to give our baby up for adoption.

We talked to friends, family and even went through Bethany Family Services to try and find a couple to adopt our baby. After looking at hundreds of portfolios, and meeting with half a dozen couples, we finally found the perfect couple to adopt our baby.

To make a long story short, it came to be the day of the delivery. And I thought that I was scared when I found out that my girlfriend was pregnant. All these thoughts came into my head, What if there are complications? What if she gets stuck? What if something happens? I just started praying. That was all I could do.

Finally she was born. I was in such shock that I can't remember how much she weighed or how long she was. I just know that she was perfect. Her head looked kind of weird at first but I asked my mom and she said that that was only temporary.

We took our new Grace back with the nurses and left my girlfriend to rest. I will never forget how much Grace cried. They let me help clean her up and they put her under a heat lamp. She still kept crying terribly. It was then that my mother took my hand and said, "Terry do this." She guided my hand to the bottom of her feet. She stopped crying and just looked up at me for what seemed like forever.

When it all came down to it, my girlfriend decided that she could not go through with the adoption. I place no blame on her whatsoever. It was a very hard decision for me to accept and I didn't have Grace growing inside me.

Grace is now 2 years old and lives in Michigan with her mother. I get to see her on my breaks from school. I have her now for a whole month before I go back to school. She is a joy. The thought of not having her brings an emptiness that I cannot handle.

That is why I am protesting Planned Parenthood. I want to put an end to such an evil organization that wants to destroy the lives of children like my Grace.

I plan on training Grace pretty soon in anti-abortion combat. Basically that means that I am going to start bringing her to protests, praying with her for the end of abortion, and teaching her abortion dialog. You know the usual.

Finally in Iowa! Day One a Success at a Rudy Event

Countdown to the Iowa Caucuses: 5 Days

After a plane cancellation and an overnight stay in Atlanta, I finally made it to Iowa! Thanks to all my friends here in Iowa for the great advice before I left: "Bring an extra jacket!" They were right... Its freeeezing here!

However, the 21 degree weather (11 degrees with the wind chill) did not stop the Schilling family from joining me to protest Planned Parenthood outside a Rudy Giuliani event in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. The Schillings are an awesome pro-life family of 11 from the Quad Cities. We'll hear more in a post from the oldest of 9 children, Terry, on how he became a full-scale pro-life activist.

Our first protest was a huge success -- we got rid of a ton of fliers and the reception was great. We got lots of "keep up the good work comments," many more then the usual snide comments we got tonight. After being photographed by several photographers, we did media interviews with CBS and Newsday. We were right on message: We were protesting Planned Parenthood to educate voters about their crimes and to encourage Rudy Giuliani to investigate Planned Parenthood if elected president.

We got another big protest coming up tomorrow, so stay tuned for more!

Getting the Message Out

Here is the flyer that we are currently passing out in Iowa and will also pass out in New Hampshire:

Exposed:

Criminal Activity of Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is a tax exempt organization that receives over $300 million a year in taxpayer funds to operate 860 facilities around the country. Given the below allegations of illegal practices on the part of Planned Parenthood, taxpayers should not be forced to fund an organization engaging in criminal activity. Federal and state agencies and elected officials should be appalled by these practices on the part of a tax exempt organization and should immediately begin investigations of Planned Parenthood nationally and locally. This is a grave issue involving the law and ensuring the safety of women across the country. Regardless of party affiliation, one would assume that no elected official would agree to fund these kinds of illegal actions, nor should taxpayers be funding an organization that knowingly covers up illicit activities.

Arizona A Planned Parenthood affiliate was found civilly liable for failing to report the fact that the clinic had performed an abortion on a 12-year-old girl who had been impregnated by her foster brother. The abortion provider did not report the crime, and the young girl was returned to the foster home where she was raped and impregnated a second time.[1]

Ohio - A 13-year-old girl was impregnated by her high school coach, who then “persuaded” her to have an abortion. Planned Parenthood did not report the abuse, nor did it comply with the state’s own parental notification law. Three days after the abortion, the perpetrator resumed having sex with the girl, and then abandoned her. Only months later did the parents learn what had happened. The perpetrator is serving a prison sentence; Planned Parenthood disclaims all responsibility and is fighting a lawsuit by the parents.[2]

Connecticut - Forty-one-year-old Adam Gault impregnated and then procured an abortion at Planned Parenthood for a 15-year-old girl, who along with two other women, formed Gault’s harem. Although Gault initially denied he had sexually assaulted the girl, as opposed to simply sheltering her as a runaway, DNA tests established that he was the father of the aborted child. Commented Gault’s surprised attorney, "I thought that when a woman had a termination of pregnancy, that that was the end of it, so to speak." [3]

Ohio - On May 7, 2007, Denise Fairbanks filed suit against Planned Parenthood, Southwest Ohio Region for failing to report the abuse committed against her by her father. Denise had been sexually abused by her father from the time she was 13. When she became pregnant at age 16, her father took her to Planned Parenthood for an abortion. Although she informed clinic staff that the she was being forced to have sex, they did not make any further inquiries or report the situation. After the abortion, Fairbanks was returned to the same abusive situation, where she remained for another year and a half. [4]

Kansas – On October 17, 2007, 23 felony counts of making a false information, 26 misdemeanor counts of unlawful failure to maintain record, 29 counts of unlawful failure to determine viability for a late-term abortion, and 29 counts of unlawful late-term abortion against a Planned Parenthood facility in Kansas (Overland Park).[5]

"First in the Nation" Planned Parenthood Project: What is it?

The "First in the Nation" Planned Parenthood Project is a special nonpartisan pro-life initiative which serves three purposes:
  • Educate voters in Iowa, the "First in the Nation" caucus state about the crimes of Planned Parenthood and how they hurt women. Iowa kicks off the 2008 presidential election process with its caucuses on January 3rd.
  • Educate the presidential candidates about the crimes of Planned Parenthood and urge them to investigate Planned Parenthood if elected president. We will especially target Hillary Clinton and urge her, if elected as the first woman president, to stand up and protect women from Planned Parenthood.
  • Educate the national media, which descends upon Iowa for the caucuses, and urge them to investigate the crimes of Planned Parenthood and report them to the public.
How will we do this?
  • Organize pro-life activists in Iowa to do Planned Parenthood protests outside of presidential campaign events.
  • Pass out informational flyers and hold up signs describing the crimes of Planned Parenthood.
  • Conduct media interviews with interested members of the media.
You can track all the progress of this exciting new initiative everyday at this website!
